Barbecue Love

My husband is not romantic, at least not in the traditional sense. He had to work on my birthday this year, so he left a gift with Taryn. Jon Stewart’s book Earth. Very romantic, by our standard anyway.

We do have a mildly romantic story about when we met. We were both in the Graduate Assistant program at Purdue. At the Theatre Department orientation meeting we all complained about going to the Purdue-wide Graduate Assistant orientation. The chair of the department, Russ Jones told us, “you should go, you never know you might meet your future spouse there.” That was 9 years ago in West Lafayette, Indiana. The rest as they say, is history.

We loved Indiana, only because of the food. There were several places we loved like House of Saigon. They have excellent hot and sour soup. You just have to ignore the fact that the chef doesn’t always wear a shirt. (True story) And Jimmy Johns, where you order a sub sandwich and it’s delivered before you hang up the phone. (Almost true story)

The best part of Indiana though is The Smokehouse. Dallas and I love barbecue. You might call us barbecue afficianados. He (obviously) is from Texas, so he knows a little bit about it. Since Indiana we have lived in Texas, Georgia, and now Alaska. We’ve traveled all over and tried BBQ joints all along the way.

Not one has come close to The Smokehouse. Not. Even. Close.

Seriously, they have a brisket sandwich that consists of brisket, provolone, and a giant onion ring. Wow.

We were told there was a place outside of Anchorage that we “have to try.” Today we did. It’s called The Turnagain Arm Pit. It was good, not great.

Not compared to The Smokehouse.

On the way out Dallas and I whined about how much we missed that place.

That’s when he said the most romantic words he has ever spoken to me.

“The Smokehouse is one of only two good things Russ Jones ever showed me.”

“What was the other one?”

“You.”

    Awwwww…warm and fuzzys all around.
All the sweeter that he’s not romantic by nature :)

Double awww. I’d send you some bbq if I knew how to get it there safely. Absent that, we’ll go to South Street this weekend and I’ll say “um boy, I wish Bridget and Dallas could be with us tonight.”

    Aww… adorable :)
The romance is still there, seen best over ribs or other barbequed foods!

Lived here for 21 years and have never been there! Now I think we must go!

That IS romantic! Of course, my husband would’ve punctuated that with a fart – glad yours was more loving.

I want to hear about the shirtless chef. And in my house I’d call that a win in the romance department.

I feel your pain. Our favorite BBQ place in town just closed their doors. Especially hurts because good BBQ is very hard to find in Philly. There’s always cheesesteaks I guess…

  8. Great Story!

I won’t brag about all the good BBQ here in KC! HAHA! I’ll send ya some if you want!

I often think about the Smokehouse as well. In fact, I had a dream about it last week. I live a block from Jimmy Johns here so I have that going for me. And I laughed out loud about the shirtless chef, it had been a long time since I thought about that. I was just telling someone at work about party fries yesterday. Long lunch with you two always made my week. Perhaps the place you went this week was missing me telling both of you how disfunctional you are.

soo sweet! :) And i’m drooling imagining the barbecue already. Funny because just last week, i had a really bad case of pork barbecue craving. I had to settle for the street food kind, which I couldn’t really say the best because I really do not have such discerning food palate, but it did assuage the craving. Here in Cebu, or anywhere in the Philippines, it is one of the most popular street food, pork barbecue that is.
