Taryn is away on her yearly summer adventure. Right now she is at summer camp. She and John have attended the same one since they were in the 5th grade. The last two years John has had to skip camp to play club soccer. She’s on her own. Taryn is a smart girl, always has been. She’s trustworthy and makes good choices. I trust her completely.
This year she is not simply attending camp as a camper. She is in a program for “Leaders In Training” or LIT. This program is for kids who are a little too old for regular camp, but not quite old enough to be a camp counselor. The LIT years are fun because they don’t have to participate in activities they don’t enjoy, like open swim and attending a few other events.
The other big bonus is cell phone time. A few times a week she can check her cell phone out of the office and has free reign to call whomever she wants for a half an hour. After years of camp with no communication other than letters – this is a very big deal. On Tuesday she called me and John. (As much as she hates to admit it, she loves her dumb twin brother.)
I was worried because she didn’t seem that excited about camp. The staff has changed over and she’s there at a different time of summer than usual. She was out of sorts and a little sad. I thought that maybe this would be the last time she attended summer camp. It made me sad for her.
But today she was much more spirited. She was happy, making jokes, back to her usual self.
I asked if she had made some new friends. She said yes, mostly other LIT’s and counselors. She went on to say that on the previous day she had two hours off so she laid down for a few minutes, then went into the conference room. There were two other LIT’s there already and they all hung out and talked. The other LIT’s were from France and Columbia. They asked her a lot of questions about life in Alaska. She said they kept asking her questions, sometimes both at once! She had to ask them to slow down, because she had a hard time understanding them when they talked at once.
I was so happy to hear her so happy and to know she was making friends and having fun.
Then she dropped the hammer.
The Columbian and French LIT’s…are boys.
So…this is the last time she’s going to camp.

You can’t keep those boys away for long
Haaahaaa…I didn’t see that one coming! =D
Bwahahahaha! Oh Mommy! Don’t be too harsh!
I hope Taryn gets to post about this uhmm “adventure” here!
Lol. She’s a good girl.
sounds like a better place then a winery for the summer / as perty as she is good luck with the boys / keep the shot gun by the fron door as i did for you !!!!!!! ///
Taryn will probably want a trip to Columbia or France next year. Glad to see she is having a good time.
She has 3 brothers, just remind her that all boys are like them when girls aren’t around.Good Luck!
Watch out for those internationals!
I got my first kiss at a camp for teenagers when I was 15. He was from Moscow, and we exchanged lovely long letters for months the next year. You can imagine my mother’s surprise when he called in the middle of the night on my birthday! I still have those letters somewhere….Anyway, my years at Maine Teen Camp were the best, and you didn’t even get old enough to go until you were 13-17.
As I am reading your post my 15yr old Aidan is watching the movie “Meatballs”. She has been to 2 camps this summer. She came home with more phone numbers and boys to text. Wyatt, the 17yr old, has football in the mornings and 2 jobs. Thank goodness he is too busy for girls.
Maybe they were interested in learning how to explode mosquitoes. What? It could happen…Okay, I’ll go get my shotgun ready.
HAHA I told her to stay away from boys when she left! Then she texted us yesterday and said she has met a few cuties….now I know who she was talking about. lol
(evil giggle)
Aww I had some of my best summer romances as a camp counselor and LIT….wait maybe I SHOULDN”T have told you that. I love summer camp glad she’s having a good time!
Are you afraid because she’s like you? Or not worried at all because she’s like you? I can’t decide which side of the fence with my girls!
hee, hee, and so it starts… I’m laughing because my daughter’s not even three yet, I’ll be hyperventilating in about 13 years…
Although Heidi’s comment is right on the money…
I wouldn’t worry. Just think back to what you were doing when you were 15 and… Wait. If you were anything like me, maybe you should go back to worrying.
(Glad I’ve only got boys!)
Omygoodness,
They are probably fighting over her! <3
LOL! I am killing myself laughing at the computer right now! Just you wait till she wants to go and travel overseas! You’re in trouble then. At least you know if Taryn ever wants to come to Australia, I’ll keep the boys at a safe distance
What a scream! Literally.
