This is on the side of a bottle of Woodchuck Hard Cider:
It makes me angry. I don’t even know what a gluten is. I don’t think most food allergies are real. But even if they are – this was on a bottle of beer. Is nothing sacred?

You just made me homesick. Woodchuck is MY FAVORITE cider and I can’t get it on Korea:(
I’ll think of you next time I drink one Christine!
Ummm, as a person who actually keeps track of gluten in food since my son is gluten free for almost 6 years now, I feel I must tell you that a lot of beer is not gluten free, since wheat and barley are main sources of gluten. Of course, Matt, being only 8, doesn’t drink a lot of beer, so it hasn’t been a problem for us.
I have to agree, though, that an awful lot of people are going gluten free. It’s like when everyone dropped carbs a a few years ago. Since I have no intention of giving up bread, or more importantly Pop-Tarts, it’s not in MY future.
I’m down with people doing gluten free who really need it. But those who are doing it just beause – also no problem – just hush up about it.
Also, pop tarts are delicious. Why isn’t there a cheescake pop tart?
There is a disease called celiac disease that is caused by eating gluten. Those should be the only ones worried about gluten-free beer. However, it’s turning into some kind of fad diet. Some people are just stupid that way.
Lots of people are just stupid. I hate them.
Hard cider is not beer. It’s essentially alcoholic apple or pear cider. For those who can’t have gluten lest it kill them, as can happen with those who suffer from Celiac Disease like my mother, knowing what is and isn’t gluten free is rather important.
I see your point, but don’t people who have the allergy know what a gluten is? She would know not to drin regular beer right? She doesn’t need Woodchuck trying to sell her up by pointing out something she already knows. Right?
Sometimes you know just by looking at something that you can’t have it (for Celiac sufferers). Sometimes you don’t. With beer…yes, it’s usually a safe bet you can’t have it. However, there are a few actual beers out there (which Woodchuck is again not a beer) that are gluten free. She wouldn’t touch it anyway, as she’s also not allowed yeast anymore. Samuel Smith Brewery makes 2 or 3 gluten free beers and they are not hard ciders like Woodchuck. Even wine she is selective about because of how they are made. I bought an apple wine for her recent visit because I knew she could have it. Just like vodka…only potato based vodka is allowed for her. Additionally, gluten comes in a variety of forms and one really has to know what they are looking for on a food label to know if an item contains it.
Actually, I never understood the point of Hard Cider – I always thought that should be cider laced with rum. It’s okay, save all the gluten for us beer lovers!
But this way you don’t have to do the added step of mixing booze with your cider.
No. Nothing is sacred. And I feel pretty much as you do about food allergies. I actually work in psychiatry and a nurse and I were just speculating the other day that the longer the list of allergies, the crazier you know a patient will be.
That is probably completely true!
Gluten is found in grains like wheat and rye. So beer, breads anything made with flour contains gluten. Research has shown that autistic children especially, benefit from a gluten, casein and lactose free diet and those with celiac disease can’t have gluten. While the fakers are irritating, the boom in gluten free foods lately has been a godsend to those who really need it. My daughter works with autistic children doing rehab and respite care and said the gluten free diet is a huge help with them. Also most people who claim to have food allergies, merely have sensitivities with certain things, mostly lactose and gluten. I find if I limit my intake of dairy and breads(notice I didn’t say beer) I feel better and keep my weight down easier. Sorry, there’s your medical lecture for the month.
I love hard cider and would drink it gluten free or not. Lol
Cheers to drinking hard cider!
Joe will yell in the grocery store: I WANT THE ONE WITH GLUTEN!!!
I think I love Joe. (But not in a creepy way)
HA! HA! You thought you were making a funny joke, and instead got educated and lectured. Sucks to be you- now go have a beer.
I still think it’s a funny joke
I wish I could have a beer with you – gluten free or not.
I heart gluten. I hate things that dont have it in it. This is my own social protest.
This is my favorite protest ever. Occupy Gluten. I heart you.
[...] on August 15, 2012 | by Bridget | No Comments I got the smack laid down on me yesterday for my WTF Wednesday post. I thought it was funny that my bottle of Woodchuck Hard Cider was labeled “Gluten [...]
If I had to die from cider, that wouldn’t be so bad.
True words sister. Seriously.
I am not sure why people jumped on you about this post. I certainly wouldn’t have! The hash tag, “people with food allergies annoy me” kind of makes me sad because I hate that my son has to be different in this way. He already has other special needs so it is just one more thing. I just hope people aren’t annoyed by his allergies since they are real (as opposed to people doing the diet of the day, or who say they’re allergic because one time it made them feel sick).
