Monday Listicles

When I was a kid I dreamed of writing a blog that my family and tens of other people read. See, dreams totally come true! I’m kidding, of course. I really dreamed about cleaning up other people’s bodily functions, cooking, and cleaning on repeat seven days a week. Double win!

No seriously, I didn’t dream about any of the crap that is currently my life. Stasha and Wendy at Twisted Domestic Goddess want to know what I really wanted to be when I grew up. This is probably going to be more depressing than my actual life.

I Dreamed These Dreams

10. I wanted to be the girl in ZZ Tops “Legs” video. Post-makeover of course. I could never be a shoe salesperson (her pre-make-over self) because feet are gross.

ZZ Top9. Elizabeth Wakefield. Not Jessica, she was a hussy.

8. A veterinarian. I wanted to be a vet for a long time, but only for cats. I am totally a cat person (I don’t have one because of Dallas’ alleged allergies) because cats don’t care if you like them or not. That makes them awesome. Once I realized being a vet was more than just playing with cats I changed my mind.

Cats don't care

7. A Catholic Nun. Stop laughing, I’m serious. I went to Catholic school most of my life and had fabulous Sisters as teachers. We used to go visit the convent once a year and play softball and make crafts with them. It seemed like the ideal life. The closest I got was being a Stage Manager for an undergraduate production of Nunsense II.

Nunsense II

6. A Singer. Not that I can sing. At all. But neither can half the people on the radio, so I totally could have done this.

5. Secretary. The kind that wore pencil skirts and filed her nails all day long. If there are any jobs for that kind of secretary, I’m available. (Also, I’ve never seen Mad Men, but this photo seemed to fit.)

4. A teacher. I majored in Education for one semester. Then I remembered that I don’t like kids.

3. Stage Manager. I have a MA in Theatre with an emphasis in Stage Management. Not an ideal job for someone with a giant herd of children. C’est la vie.

2. A college professor. It’s just like being a teacher, only the kids are shaped like grown ups.

1. Independently wealthy. I’m still hoping this might pan out.

Money does buy happiness.

What did you want to be when you were a kid?

I wanted to be Elizabeth too. Actually, I think I just wanted her neat, organized room. The way they compared her to Jessica concerning their rooms was hilarious.

  2. Leslie Gale says:

Hi. Well this will be getting the cat out of the bag. I was born in 1960. (Just prefacing). I wanted to be a Go-Go dancer. I loved the short skirts, the white leather boots with the fringe and a small place with a pole up in the air, dancing and spiring the crowd on. Oh and the lights are dim with the metallic ball spinning causing ambiance.

  3. Kate Hall says:

Great list! Very funny! I wanted to be th Legs girl too. She was so pretty and got to wear those cute trampy outfits. I love that grumpy cat. I had to stop posting his pics because I was afraid I would OD my fan page followers and they’d drop me. But I LOL at every one of them.

  4. Your list CRACKED me up! And sounds quite a bit like mine.
Here in my town we have a cats-only vet. Just in case you’re still interested.
Hell, I’ll settle for being DEPENDENTLY wealthy. Just give me some freaking money!

  5. Jackie says:

I wanted to be Charlie in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. After he finds the golden ticket, of course. Who wants to clean your grandparents bed pans!? No one.

  6. Christin says:

A lottery winner. A 4th grade teacher. A singer (let’s do this!). Actress/model (I tried this but they wanted me to be too skinny). A stay-at-home mom. A lifeguard (think Baywatch). Obviously lottery winner is still in my master plan.

  7. Mirjam says:

Elizabeth was the nice one, right? I wanted to be her too. And a singer and a dancer, and a teacher and a doctor, and an actress oh and a writer, and an artist and wealthy, really really wealthy. I had big dreams..

  8. Nami says:

A Nun? Then again, Blue Nun was my mother’s favorite wine when I was a kid. Nuns make wine, that could be doable. By the way, that was, is and always will be my aspiration – a Bar Fly. Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway made it look SO attractive.

  9. Kathy Kramer says:

I wanted to be a singer, musician, a drummer, a pioneer girl and John Taylor’s girlfriend. :)

  10. Funny list!! And I wanted to be a nun too for a short while—that indoctrination they do at Catholic schools is powerful stuff indeed. But I LOVE that you included Sweet Valley High and Jessica was a hussy! Erin

  11. Wayne says:

Very funny. Well done, don’t we all wish to have a little independent wealth happening.

  12. Singer, check, wealthy, check, writer, check, vet but I can’t stand to put them in pain for any reason.. great list I need to go get on mine..

#10 and #9: How could I have forgotten these two? We LOVED that video and would RACE to the TV whenever it came on! And of course #1 works too . . . . Great list!

  16. Wendy says:

I wanted to be a singer too….but I cannot sing so I settled for playing the drums instead.Yes I was the hot girl drummer

  17. I’m sorry…I got stuck back at “I hate kids.” You do realize that your eggs are highly competitive and TWICE there was a tie, right?

All I wanted to be was a mom and a housewife. Seriously. It totally didn’t work out that way to begin with but working from home is second-best. Except he’s not as fun as he was when he was 3.

  18. I have a good friend who really wanted to be a nun at 18. Bless her heart she just went through her third divorce. And as an adult the whole theater thing sounds really cool.

  19. Jo-Anne Clough says:

    Let’s see, a cow girl…..a bull rider…..a veterinarian…a nun….a famous actress….a teacher ( wait…I really did that)and a baseball player. Where did I go wrong????

  20. Lori says:

Believe it or not….I wanted to be a hooker. Yes, you read that correct. A hooker. I didn’t know what they did but I loved their clothes and they always had the best shoes. Seriously.

  21. Grace says:

I remember the Sweet Valley High books! I thought they were both hussys!
I wanted to be a back up singer for Duran Duran. I practiced the “da na na nah” to The Reflex…a lot!

  22. Heidi says:

Sweet Valley Twins and Sweet Valley High were my favorites!! You know that question, if you could be re-incarnated as anything, what would you be? My answer is independently wealthy everytime!

  23. Ducky says:

I think when I grow up I want to be a moonshiner. Pretty certain THAT would be fun!

  24. I am so with you on #1, 2, 4 and 6.

  25. I love your take on cats. I totally agree. They’re not all desperate and needy. They don’t need affirmation from their staff to know they’re cool. Nice list!

  26. Di Smith says:

    I wanted to be a lawyer … and I am! :-)

  27. Jo Eberhardt says:

I love it. I wanted to be Elizabeth, too. :)

Let’s see, what did I want to be? A famous author, a singer (but I can’t sing either), a psychologist, and back to a famous author. I’m working on it!

  28. Azara says:

Ha! I have that last picture as a magnet on my fridge. That’s why I like cats too: they have dignity. Also, they don’t bury their nose in your crotch the minute they meet you.

You’re the second person on this linky who has mentioned wanting to be a nun. I have to say that one never crossed my mind.

  29. Janice says:

Hahaha! I loved the last two…kids shaped as grownups…independently rich… Great list. Let me know if ya ever achieve that last one! :D

  30. Rorybore says:

aw, Sweet Valley high!! they were awesome!
I am sure I wanted to be Trixie Belden at some point. Not Nancy Drew – Trixie.

Too funny! My husband wanted to be a nun too!

  32. paul says:

A nun? Really? Sorry can’t get past that. Great list.
