Twins are competitive. That’s an absolute. As a mother of two sets and the daughter of one, I’m an authority. Reese and Jackson compete regularly to see who can get me to scream the loudest. Jackson usually wins. Taryn and John compete too. Being different genders has lessened their competitive nature. Or maybe they realize they’re both good at different things.
John is witty while Taryn has mastered sarcasm. John is good at soccer and Taryn is good at being a good kid. Taryn is a good driver, John scares the crap out of me. In the last few years Taryn has been a better student than her twin. She’s gotten better grades, taken school more seriously, and been enrolled in harder classes.
John has been a solid C student who avoids homework and takes lightweight classes.
But this year things have changed. I’d like to think he is maturing and beginning to realize how important it is to get good grades. But I fear the more likely culprit is girls. Nobody wants a dumb boyfriend.
(Unless John Cusack is dumb, then all bets are off.)
This past semester John even made the honor roll. Seriously, that hasn’t happened since the sixth grade.
I think it’s making Taryn a little jealous. She comforts herself with the fact that last year she took the classes he is now taking. So, even though they have a comparable GPA, she’s adding weight to it in her mind.
(She’s smart, she can do that kind of complicated math. I can’t even make change.)
John got her tonight though. He has her beat on one class. One class she will probably never take and would likely not out score him in.
He asked her, “Did you take Biology last year?”
“Yep”
“Spanish 3?”
“Yep”
“U.S. History?”
“Yep, honors.”
“English 10?”
“No, Honors English 9, but it’s pretty much the same thing.”
“Geometry?
“Actually, I took that two years ago.”
“Oh yeah – well, how about Basketball? Did you take Basketball?”
“No. No I did not take Basketball.”
“IN YOUR FACE, TARYN!”
